Common crops affected
- Corn
Why it matters
Stem borers tunnel corn stalks causing deadheart and lodging, with larvae protected once inside.
When it appears
At egg-hatch/early instars in whorls, before larvae bore into stalks.
How to identify it
- “Deadheart” — the central whorl/shoot dies while outer leaves stay green.
- Shot-hole feeding and frass in whorls and leaf sheaths.
- Entry/exit holes with frass on stems and stalks; tunnels visible when split.
How to manage it
- Apply Larva Control to whorls and foliage at egg-hatch;
- manage stubble to cut carry-over.
- Monitor early, treat at the right window above, and use cultural measures (sanitation, airflow/drainage or resistance/rotation as relevant).
